Bastille Networks Launches Only Software to Locate Smart Glasses in Secure Environments

New capability closes security gap as smart glasses sales surpass 7 million and head to 21 million by 2030

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bastille Networks, the leader in wireless intrusion detection systems (WIDS), announced today the release of first-of-its-kind software that can detect and locate the unique signature of smart glasses. As wearable devices move into the mainstream, Bastille’s new capability uncovers the latest threat that security guards, badges and cameras cannot always see.

"Smart glasses look like ordinary eyewear, most have a ‘recording’ light but those can be disabled. So they can record without any visible sign they are doing so and, most concerning, can send data completely bypassing traditional and even advanced security controls," said Chris Risley, CEO of Bastille Networks. What makes these devices dangerous in secure environments is precisely what makes them popular everywhere else. They are small, unobtrusive and can record. They can also be hacked. Data can be stored without anyone knowing that the glasses are recording, and the data can travel through the user’s phone rather than any company network, making it invisible to standard IT monitoring.

Bastille's software works by continuously monitoring the invisible radio signals that every wireless device emits. The new smart glasses location capability has been added to Bastille's existing platform, which already tracks thousands of device types across Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular frequencies in real time. When smart glasses enter a facility, the system identifies their unique wireless signatures within seconds, pinpoints their location within one to three meters and automatically alerts security teams. Those alerts feed directly into the security systems organizations already use, with no new infrastructure required.

Bastille currently protects millions of square feet of secure and sensitive facilities around the globe and those customers will get the new smart glasses location capabilities with their next subscription software update.

The consequences of failing to protect against smart glasses are significant, and steps to address them are only just beginning. The U.S. Air Force banned Meta smart glasses for uniformed personnel in early 2026 over espionage concerns. A London High Court judge also threw out the testimony from a witness caught using connected smart glasses to receive real-time coaching during questioning.

The broader market context makes the timing urgent. According to Counterpoint Research, more than 7 million smart glasses were sold in 2025, with sales growing over 110% year-over-year. Omdia's latest XR near-eye display market forecast projects 21 million will be shipped annually by 2030.

As Bastille's State of Wireless Security in 2026 Report found, wireless security vulnerabilities grew more than 20 times faster than the overall cyber threat landscape in 2025, with 937 new vulnerabilities disclosed, nearly three per day. Smart glasses represent the next evolution of that threat, one that is harder to spot, easier to deny and leaves no evidence behind.

In recent years, U.S. prosecutors have charged or convicted individuals across government and private industry for using personal devices to steal sensitive information, from soldiers photographing classified documents and government employees transmitting intelligence to foreign handlers, to a former Google engineer convicted in 2026 of stealing thousands of pages of AI trade secrets on behalf of China.
