Scholarships Worth $1.2 Million Awarded to Teamster Children by Hoffa Fund This Year

Teamster Families Across the United States and Canada Benefit

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--More than 300 high school seniors who are the children of Teamsters Union members won academic and vocational scholarships from the James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund this year. Valued at $1.2 million, the scholarship awards mark the 26^th year that the Fund has distributed funds to support Teamster children in their goals of a college degree or vocational program.

“The Fund’s impact on Teamster families has been immeasurable,” said James P. Hoffa, Teamsters General President Emeritus. “Since the Fund’s founding in 1999, more than $18 million in scholarship assistance has been distributed. We are proud to support Teamster families.”

Iris, a $10,000 scholarship winner attending the University of California-Berkeley, recently wrote, “As a first-generation college student, this scholarship is an immense help right now with tuition.”

And Brett, an engineering student who won a $10,000 scholarship and attended Tufts University, wrote, “The James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship has helped reduce my family’s need for additional loans and allowed me to attend my dream school.”

James R. Hoffa became a Teamster member in 1934 and served as General President for 14 years, and, in recognition of his service to the union and its members, was honored as General President Emeritus. The JRHMSF is an independent organization established and registered as a tax-exempt entity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Fund is established solely to provide scholarships to the child or dependent of a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and contributions to the Fund are deductible as charitable contributions to the extent permitted by law.
