USPTO Affirms Sila’s Ownership of Core IP for Silicon-Carbon Anode Technology (Si/C)

Sila successfully defends against the sixth challenge to its core silicon-carbon anode IP, with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) confirming no changes to its patents—further reinforcing Sila’s industry-leading intellectual property position.

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sila, an advanced battery technology and materials company, announced that it prevailed in an ex parte re-examination of Sila’s core US Patent 10,374,221 and a re-examination certificate was issued on July 23, 2026, confirming no changes to the patent’s claims. Sila holds nearly 300 patents and patents pending worldwide covering silicon-carbon anode technology (Si/C), including foundational IP for the technology and its deployment in batteries.

As the sixth successful defense against ex parte re-examination challenges, both in the United States and globally, the outcome further strengthens the company’s IP position and provides additional confidence to customers, partners, and other stakeholders as Sila ramps gigascale production of its Si/C technology, Titan Silicon®, in the United States.

“We invested years of R&D to invent this breakthrough, foundational technology, and protecting the intellectual property behind that work is critical,” said Steve Driskill, VP of Business Affairs at Sila. “This continued validation by the USPTO reinforces our position as leaders in the industry as it transitions from graphite-based batteries toward silicon-carbon technology. Additionally, it helps ensure that others cannot unfairly copy or misappropriate the technology we have worked hard to develop.”

Sila’s foundational patents predate those of others in the silicon-anode space, whose portfolios generally focus on narrower, implementation-specific technologies.

Sila’s IP strength also supports its broader technology sovereignty strategy. Its technology is fundamentally American IP, developed through 100% U.S.-based R&D and supported by American public investment, including funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and research conducted in partnership with leading universities Georgia Institute of Technology and Clemson University. The protection of Sila’s IP is critical to ensuring U.S. technological leadership for advanced battery materials and technology. Sila recently received a conditional loan commitment of up to $1.4 billion from the United States Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) to support the expansion of its manufacturing capacity at Moses Lake, Washington.

Sila’s Titan Silicon is engineered to deliver greater energy density and performance than conventional graphite-based anodes, enabling advances across applications including, AI, drones, satellites, robotics, autonomous vehicles and other critical technologies. Sila is the only advanced battery technology company in North America with GWh-scale operations.
