73% of U.S. Professionals Say Administrative Work Makes Them Miserable, New 8am Research Finds

8am’s 2026 Admin Misery Index reveals how administrative tasks are eroding focus, billable hours, and personal time, even as AI adoption grows

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--8am™, the professional business platform purpose-built for the needs of legal, accounting, and client-focused professionals, today released its 2026 Admin Misery Index. The cross-industry survey of 1,200 U.S. professionals examines how administrative work - tasks like time tracking, invoicing, and compliance paperwork - affects overall employee wellbeing, workplace productivity, and expectations around AI.

“The Admin Misery Index shows how this administrative burden affects professionals’ time, focus, and well-being,” said Zoz Cuccias, Vice President of Communications, 8am.

Key findings from 8am’s Admin Misery Index

  • Admin work is making U.S. professionals miserable: Nearly three in four respondents (73%) say administrative work makes them feel at least slightly miserable.
  • Admin work is driving the “Sunday Scaries”: 8 in 10 professionals experience at least some level of Sunday Scaries due to admin-related work before the workweek begins—52% experience moderate, significant, or complete dread.
  • Admin work is interfering with core responsibilities: Nearly three in four respondents (73%) say administrative tasks interfere with their core responsibilities at least sometimes.
  • Admin work is taking away productive and billable time: 82% of respondents estimate losing at least one productive or billable hour each week to administrative tasks. 44% say they lose four hours or more.
  • Admin work is extending the workday: Nearly six in 10 respondents (59%) have worked outside normal hours because of administrative responsibilities. One-third have broken plans with family or friends, while 31% have lost personal time or time off.
  • The top administrative tasks professionals want AI to alleviate: Time tracking (40%), compliance paperwork (37%), scheduling and calendar management (36%), billing and invoicing (35%), and reporting and reconciliation (35%).
  • Workers want more automation, but adoption barriers remain: 35% cite a lack of automation as a barrier to reducing administrative work. Separately, 28% cite a lack of trust in AI, while 25% point to data privacy or confidentiality concerns.

The findings come as AI use at work continues to grow. Gallup data from Q1 2026 found that half of U.S. employees use AI at work, and 65% view its impact on productivity positively. Yet 8am’s research shows that professionals are still losing time, focus, and personal capacity to repetitive administrative tasks.

“Administrative work is essential to keeping a healthy business running, but even with the explosion of AI, too much of it is still repetitive, disconnected, and pulling professionals away from strategic, high-value work,” said Zoz Cuccias, Vice President of Communications, 8am. “The Admin Misery Index shows how this administrative burden affects professionals’ time, focus, and well-being. Addressing these pain points doesn’t just improve business efficiency, it removes a source of daily frustration that drags professionals down at work and at home.”

Legal industry insights

The legal industry carries significant administrative overhead, from timekeeping and billing to client communications, compliance, and payment collection. To examine how that burden affects firms, 8am fielded a separate companion survey of 400 U.S. legal professionals. The survey illuminated the impact that hours lost to administrative work have on law firms:

  • Thirty-nine percent estimate losing four or more hours of billable work per week to administrative work
  • Twenty-six percent estimate that admin work costs their firm at least $10,000 in revenue each month
  • Seventy-eight percent say administrative work has limited their ability to add clients or grow their practice to some extent
  • Two-thirds say admin work at least sometimes interferes with their core responsibilities.
  • Two-thirds also say that they procrastinate on admin work at least sometimes
  • More than a third have delayed client or customer work because of admin tasks
  • Twenty-two percent confessed to having missed a deadline due to admin work

Among legal professionals, time-tracking is both the leading administrative stressor (44%) and the top administrative task respondents want AI to help reduce or eliminate (42%). The other top admin tasks for which legal professionals are seeking increased AI support to mitigate are:

  • Billing and invoicing (36%)
  • Scheduling and calendar management (33%)
  • Payment collection or invoice chasing (28%)
  • Reduce or eliminate client communications (23%)
