Impossible Metals' Eureka II Recovers Itself From the Ocean, Fully Autonomously

New footage from Halifax shows the American ocean-technology company's underwater vehicle find its surface vessel beneath the waves, align, attach, and return to the deck with no human hand on the controls, clearing one of the gating hurdles to scalable ocean robotics.

PITTSBURGH, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Impossible Metals, an American ocean-technology company, today released footage of a live offshore demonstration in which its Eureka II vehicle recovered itself from the open ocean without human intervention. Beneath the wave zone, the autonomous vehicle located its surface vessel, aligned to it, attached with an integrated SmartHook, and returned to the deck on its own, clearing one of the hardest problems standing between subsea robotics and commercial scale.

The vehicle paired acoustic positioning to find the vessel with visual guidance to align to it, then completed the connection through a mechanical smart hook that secured the vehicle for retrieval from the water. The full recovery sequence ran autonomously, with no operator controlling the vehicle at any point.

“Autonomous recovery is a gating function. If a subsea platform cannot reliably retrieve itself in real ocean conditions, outside a lab, it cannot scale,” said Jason Gilham, Chief Technology Officer of Impossible Metals. “Halifax shows it working in open water, and it shows it working the way it will have to work every day in the field.”

Autonomous docking and recovery underpin the economics of sustained deployment. Every recovery that runs without a crew intervening reduces vessel downtime and cost, enables higher-frequency deployment cycles, lowers human risk, and raises how much of the time the system is actually working.
