After participating in Money Matters, Carol began viewing money not just as something to spend, but as a tool to achieve her long-term goals. The Money Matters financial education program from Boys & Girls Clubs of America helped shape how she approached her first paycheck by using her earnings to fund coursework and advance her path to college as a first-generation student.

Carol, a member of Boys & Girls Club of San Francisco's Excelsior Clubhouse and a finalist in the organization's 2026 Youth of the Year competition, has applied the financial skills she gained through Money Matters to pursue educational opportunities and give back to her community. She used income from internships to fund an online summer course and Advanced Placement exams and has raised more than $6,000 for community causes. She also advocates for paid internships so more young people can gain career experience and develop financial confidence.

“Money Matters helped me see money as something I could use to create opportunities for myself and my future,” said Carol. “The program gave me the confidence to think ahead about college, make smart financial decisions, and work toward building a career where I can help open doors for others.”

At a time when many young people are navigating rising education costs and financial independence earlier in life, programs like Money Matters help teens build practical financial skills they can use right away.
