Calix Extends Platform Leadership Beyond Broadband, Enabling Secure Grid Monitoring for Critical Utility Infrastructure
Advancing and facilitating trusted partnerships with 100+ electric cooperatives and utility providers, Calix introduces secure grid monitoring capabilities—supported by the newly launched GigaPro ONT—to improve the reliability and resiliency of communications infrastructure while protecting critical assets
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) today announced a grid monitoring solution on the AI-native Calix One™ platform. Extending platform capabilities to utility providers, the solution combines the newly launched GigaPro® GPR1011XH optical network terminal (ONT), AXOS®-powered E-Series access appliances, and network operations tools on a standards-based passive optical network (PON) architecture. Building on insights from utility industry leaders Conexon and Irby Utilities, Calix is expanding trusted partnerships with more than 100 electric cooperatives, municipalities, and utility providers through grid monitoring capabilities that enable secure, cost-effective management of critical grid assets over resilient, intelligent communications infrastructure.
“By leveraging the Calix One platform, now enhanced with its grid monitoring solution, providers can leverage fiber infrastructure to modernize critical communications,” said Patrick Reams, vice president of technology and communications at Irby Utilities.

As utilities invest billions to modernize the electric grid, mission-critical grid operations increasingly depend on highly resilient, reliable communications networks as much as power infrastructure. Electric cooperatives, which own and maintain nearly 42 percent of U.S. electric distribution lines, are at the center of this transformation. Drawing on decades of experience helping electric cooperatives operate and scale their broadband networks, Calix has enabled exceptional business outcomes, including reducing OSS/BSS integration from 18 months to just 10 weeks, turning up subscribers 83 percent faster, reducing mean time to repair 75 percent, and lowering operating costs up to 50 percent.
Providers can now expand their Calix partnerships and better serve their utility markets with a solution that delivers:
- A purpose-built ONT appliance for utility environments. The compact, hardened GigaPro GPR1011XH fits into existing field cabinets for indoor and outdoor deployments, enabling utility providers to deploy reliable, low-latency fiber communications deeper into their network while avoiding costly upgrades.
- Secure, modernized utility communications networks. The GigaPro ONT is DC-powered and attaches to XGS-PON to deliver 10GE LAN connectivity, helping utility providers replace fragmented legacy architectures with a scalable, secure fiber-based solution that provides integrated Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) data encryption.
- Centralized operations across distributed infrastructure. The Calix One platform will deliver agentic capabilities for utilities to increase visibility of grid assets and communications networks, helping them proactively monitor, manage, and troubleshoot critical infrastructure.
- Greater value from existing fiber investments. Ecosystem integrations with partners like Conexon and Irby Utilities extend grid monitoring capabilities over existing fiber infrastructure—reducing deployment complexity and accelerating modernization initiatives.
- Flexible deployment options for utility providers. Calix E-series access appliances—powered by AXOS—extend secure, reliable, fiber-based connectivity to substations, remote sites, and other critical infrastructure locations, supporting a scalable foundation for grid modernization.
Carl Meyerhoefer, senior vice president of business development at Conexon, said: “We built our fiber network to provide every electric cooperative partner with a fiber foundation for smart grid connectivity—enabling both grid monitoring and broader modernization initiatives. Many early adopters are already putting these capabilities to work. With the new GigaPro ONT appliance, Calix is delivering a purpose-built solution that will help our member cooperatives accelerate deployment and expand the value of smart grid and electric membership cooperative services across their networks.”
Patrick Reams, vice president of technology and communications at Irby Utilities, said: “Working with utility providers across the country, we see firsthand how rapidly communications requirements are changing as grid modernization initiatives accelerate. Electric cooperatives and utility providers are looking for secure, resilient networks that can support future innovations—including real-time HD video surveillance. By leveraging the Calix One platform, now enhanced with its grid monitoring solution, providers can leverage fiber infrastructure to modernize critical communications, improve operational visibility, simplify operations, and establish a long-term foundation for grid transformation.”
Shane Eleniak, chief product officer at Calix, said: “The future of the grid depends on the same element that transformed rural communities: trusted communications infrastructure. Drawing on our longstanding partnerships with fiber providers, many of which stretch back decades, we are excited to extend the Calix One platform to connect grid monitoring appliances to utility network operations centers. As communications and energy converge, providers now have a single, intelligent, and secure platform that helps them operate critical infrastructure, automate work with AI, and deliver differentiated experiences that strengthen the communities they serve.”
