teamLab Unveils New Series from Light Sculpture - Flow at teamLab Borderless. Special Exhibit, "On the Asymmetry of the Universe," on View Through October 8
Asymmetric Existence is a single sculpture formed by the integration of two light sculptures: one that appears only in the physical space and is not reflected in the mirror, and another that appears only inside the mirror and does not exist in real space. Inherently, mirrors reflect physical space symmetrically. However, here, real space and the mirror image space are not in a symmetrical relationship. The two sculptures of light appear asymmetrically in different spaces, yet they emerge as a single sculptural existence within the viewer's perception. The surface of the mirror is not merely a boundary surface that symmetrically reflects real space, but becomes a field that connects the existences that appear in real space and the mirror image space. It is an attempt to expand sculpture from a physical object closed in real space, to an existence that traverses real space and the mirror image space, integrated within perception. To commemorate the reopening, teamLab unveils two new series, Asymmetric Existence and Chromatic Existence, featured in the special exhibit "On the Asymmetry of the Universe."
The special exhibit, “On the Asymmetry of the Universe,” runs from Wednesday, July 8, 2026 through Thursday, October 8, 2026.
Light Sculpture - Flow
The inside and outside of an ocean vortex are composed of the same water; there is no material difference between them. Yet, despite this, why do we perceive a vortex as a singular entity, or even sense a form of life within it?
The difference between the inside and outside of a vortex lies in the order, not the material. When order is born within a flow, existence emerges even without material difference or a material surface boundary.
In Light Sculpture - Flow, a sculpture is created when a continuous stream of light rays forms an order within the space.
The sculpture here differs from that of a physical object. It is created not by a material surface boundary, but by flow and order, continuously changing dynamically while being influenced by the presence and behavior of people. It is a spatial existence with an ambiguous boundary between the artwork and the body.
Light Sculpture - Flow is an attempt to expand sculpture from a fixed physical object into a spatial existence without a material surface boundary that is created by flow and order.
