Redfin Reports 15% Fewer Canadians Are Searching for Homes in the U.S. Than Last Year

  • Over the last two years, Canadian searches for U.S. homes have dropped roughly 37%.
  • Canada-based home searches declined in 45 of the 50 most populous U.S. metros, with the biggest drops in San Antonio (-51.8%), Austin (-48.6%), Nassau County, NY (-33.4%) and Houston (-32.5%).

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The number of Canada-based Redfin.com users searching for U.S. homes to buy or rent fell 15.3% year over year in June, according to a new report from Redfin, the real estate brokerage powered by Rocket. That compares with a 10.1% decline in May.

Over the past two years, Canadian searches for U.S. homes have dropped roughly 37%, after posting a 25.7% year-over-year decline in June 2025.

Redfin search data is an early indicator of housing demand, but searches do not necessarily result in moves or completed home purchases.

“Canada’s economy is starting to recover after a weak start to the year, but uncertainty around trade, jobs, the domestic housing market and inflation is still prompting many Canadians to think twice about making a major purchase,” said Chen Zhao, Redfin’s head of economics research. “Buying a home in another country is a particularly big financial commitment, so it makes sense that some Canadians are putting those plans on hold.”

Canadian Demand Is Falling in 45 of the 50 Largest U.S. Metros

Canada-based home searches declined from a year earlier in 45 of the 50 most populous U.S. metros.

The biggest decline was in San Antonio, where Canada-based searches dropped 51.8% year over year. Canada-based searches fell 48.6% in Austin, 33.4% in Nassau County, NY, 32.5% in Houston and 29.3% in Cleveland.

Canada-based searches increased in five metros. Kansas City posted the largest gain, with home searches originating in Canada rising 17.6% year over year, followed by New Brunswick, NJ (11.6%), Nashville (9.4%), Sacramento (9.3%) and St. Louis (9.3%).
