An April 2026 study – How Do AI Agents Spend Your Money – published on arXiv from researchers at The University of Michigan, Stanford University, MIT, Google DeepMind, Microsoft AI, and others analyzed eight frontier models running SWE-bench Verified through OpenHands. It found that an average agentic coding task consumed 4.17 million tokens and cost $1.857 (Link). The tech industry and the majority of large enterprises are betting on agents, though agentic workloads consume roughly a thousand times more tokens than ordinary AI interactions, per the study. They repeatedly (and inefficiently) reread context, rediscover plans, choose tools, and retry work.

As agent adoption scales, Goldman Sachs estimates global token consumption (consumer and enterprise) to increase twenty-fourfold by 2030 to ~120 quadrillion per month (Link). Market analysts say organizations are likely to support that growth by spending up to trillions of dollars on infrastructure by 2035 (Link).
