AI Is Fueling Alternative Career Paths: Only 1 in 5 Unemployed Workers Say They’d Choose a 4-Year Degree Now, New Poll Shows

Pelgo Survey of 5,000 Reveals Growing AI Skills Gap and Rising Frustration

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Pelgo, an AI-powered career transition platform, today released additional findings from a new survey of 5,000 unemployed individuals. The results indicate AI has workers rethinking traditional career paths, with many now favoring alternatives like starting their own business or attending a trade school instead of pursuing a four-year college degree.

The survey offers a real-time look at how displaced workers are navigating today’s job market, and where they are struggling most.

Conducted by third-party polling company Talker Research on behalf of Pelgo, the survey captures the real-time challenges, behaviors, and outlook of job seekers navigating one of the most dynamic employment environments in recent history.

"Traditional outplacement hasn’t kept pace with how quickly the workforce is changing, especially with the rise of AI and if entire industries disappear,” said Pelgo CEO Chieh Huang.

Key Findings:

  • Reconsidering the Value of a 4-Year Degree:
Just 20% of respondents say they would apply to a four-year college if they were 18 and making the decision again today, signaling a significant shift in how workers view traditional education pathways.
  • Growing Preference for Faster Entry into the Workforce:
10% of respondents say if they were doing it all over again, they would choose a two-year school instead of a four-year college in order to enter the job market earlier.
  • Rising Interest in Alternative Career Paths:
A quarter of all respondents say they would now choose to start a business of their own, while 17% say they would attend trade school over a four-year college if given the chance to start over.
  • AI Skills Seen as the New Normal:
More than half of the respondents (57%) say “learning to use AI in jobs will be the new normal,” signaling the urgent need for digital upskilling.
  • Confidence Gap in Current Skills:
Only 44% report feeling somewhat or very confident that their current skills are competitive in today’s job market.

A New Model for Career Transition

“People are not short on effort, they’re short on clarity,” Huang added. “What job seekers need now is a combination of intelligent technology and real human support to guide them toward the right opportunities while helping them build the skills to succeed in those roles.”

Looking Ahead

As industries continue to evolve, the ability to reskill and pivot quickly will define success for millions of workers. The survey underscores the urgency for solutions that meet job seekers where they are, offering both direction and execution support.

Pelgo is using these insights to inform the development of tools and services designed to help individuals transition into in-demand roles more efficiently and effectively.
