Agilent Launches New GC Systems with GC Assist to Improve Laboratory Efficiency and Data Quality

New 8890B and 8860B gas chromatographs integrate intelligent monitoring and remote diagnostics

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced the launch of the new 8890B GC and 8860B GC with GC Assist. GC Assist is the new, advanced instrument intelligence that provides system monitoring, built-in troubleshooting, and remote connectivity to analytical instrumentation within the laboratory’s secure network. These systems enable higher performance and productivity across gas chromatography analyses.

The new systems are designed to help laboratories reduce unplanned downtime, improve data quality, and operate more efficiently by combining updated GC hardware with integrated system monitoring, diagnostics, step-by-step troubleshooting, and maintenance procedures through GC Assist.

“These are our most advanced GC systems to date,” said Warren Potts, vice president and general manager of the Gas Phase Division at Agilent. “Laboratories are under pressure to deliver high-quality data while managing limited resources. By embedding intelligence into the instrument platform, GC Assist helps scientists identify issues earlier, maintain performance, and stay focused on their analytical work.”

The 8890B and 8860B extend GC system capabilities with enhancements designed to support higher throughput, flexibility, and ease of use. An oven light improves visibility during maintenance, while onboard maintenance videos help new users complete routine procedures. The 8860B GC increases throughput with dual simultaneous injections, while the 8890B adds flexibility with an additional detector position, supporting up to four detectors in valve configurations. The 8890B also offers up to a 30% faster oven cooling rate compared to previous models, reducing injection-to-injection cycle times and enabling laboratories to increase daily sample throughput without changing established method parameters.

GC Assist is the integrated intelligence for these systems, helping labs deliver consistent, reproducible results every day. It enables scientists to monitor instrument status, track data quality, and perform troubleshooting locally or remotely across secure laboratory networks. The system flags results that fall outside predefined quality control limits, notifies users when maintenance is required, and provides step-by-step guidance and procedures to support consistent operation and maintenance across experience levels.

GC Assist enables continuous monitoring of system performance, gas and power usage, and indicators of carrier gas leaks. By identifying issues early, GC Assist helps laboratories reduce reruns caused by system issues or unmet quality control criteria, saving time and resources while supporting operational efficiency and laboratory sustainability goals.

The new systems are being introduced globally and will be supported through Agilent’s worldwide sales, service, and application teams.
