Industry Survey Reveals 94% of Higher Education IT Teams are Understaffed Amid Rising Cybersecurity Threats and Frequent Outages

New "State of Networking and Security in Higher Education" report reveals cybersecurity as the #1 challenge, even as infrastructure complexity impedes zero trust adoption. 65% view AI adoption as integral to their strategy, bringing new challenges and opportunities.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nile, a pioneer and leader in secure and autonomous networking-as-a-service (NaaS), announced the release of a brand new research report, "The State of Networking and Security in Higher Education." The survey, which gathered insights from over 100 IT leaders and C-level executives at U.S. colleges, universities, and K-12 districts, reveals a sector struggling to manage increasingly complex infrastructure with severely limited resources, even as AI brings in new challenges and opportunities.

The report paints a stark picture of the modern campus network: a dynamic, sprawling ecosystem that is simultaneously more powerful and more exposed than ever before. As institutions face a barrage of AI-based threats and ransomware, the research underscores a critical gap between existing defensive capabilities and the evolving threat landscape.

Key findings from the report include:

  • A Workforce in Crisis: 94% of campus IT teams are operating in a state of chronic under-resourcing or perpetual "firefighting" mode. Only 6% describe themselves as adequately staffed to work proactively.
  • Security as the Top Priority: Cybersecurity and risk exposure are cited as the #1 network challenge (52%), surpassing even network performance and reliability.
  • Artificial Intelligence is a Critical Force Multiplier for Staffing: With 67% of campus IT teams currently understaffed, AI-driven automation has moved from a luxury to a "survival strategy," serving as a force multiplier that allows lean teams to manage enterprise-scale complexity.
  • Persistent Disruptions: Network outages have become normalized, with 61% of institutions experiencing disruptions at least monthly. Of those, 11% report outages occurring weekly or even daily.
  • The Zero Trust Stagnation: While 68% of IT leaders want "built-in" security, adoption is still early; only 18% of institutions are currently fully aligned with Zero Trust principles. Infrastructure complexity is cited as the leading barrier to implementation (31%).
  • A Mandate for Change: 91% of respondents are open to or already adopting AI-powered NaaS with autonomous operations to address these systemic challenges.

"Connectivity is the lifeblood of modern campuses, yet many continue to suffer from high rates of privacy breaches and unreliable access,” said Shashi Kiran, CMO of Nile. “This report highlights the acute challenges IT teams face with the complexity of the traditional operational model. To meet the demands of the AI-era, a new architectural philosophy is warranted - where security and simplicity are built-in, and where human productivity can be unleashed without resource constraints."

The report suggests that the shift toward autonomous operations and a Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) model with AI is not merely a change in consumption, but a strategic survival mechanism. By transferring infrastructure management and incident response to an autonomous service, internal IT teams can move from firefighting to high-value strategic outcomes.
