“Earth Day is once a year, but our commitment to being great stewards for the environment is core to our culture of care and respect,” explained Chuck Kuhn, CEO, JK Moving Services. “By measuring and codifying our commitment, we are able to focus our efforts on even more productive ways to shrink our carbon footprint.”
This foundational effort – led by JK’s Sustainability Task Force in partnership with Planet Mark, a dedicated carbon accounting vendor – is equipping the company with data to strategically reduce emissions and already the company’s efforts are being recognized. CDP, an independent, not-for-profit organization, operates the world’s leading environmental disclosure platform, enabling investors, companies, and regions to measure and manage their environmental impact. JK’s first-ever CDP Climate Change disclosure submission in 2024 marked a pivotal milestone in JK’s environmental transparency and strategy.
JK earned a SME-B rating for the second year in a row. This CDP rating reflects JK’s serious commitment and highlights the early progress JK has made in aligning with global climate reporting standards. The disclosure included both quantitative metrics and qualitative insights. This year, JK is further building on this baseline by again submitting numbers as part of its efforts to transparently disclose and reduce its environmental impact.
Hallmarks of JK’s environmental commitment include:
-
Waste Management
Diverting more than 4.5 million pounds of materials from landfills annually through JK Moving’s Zero Waste initiatives. These efforts are grounded in circular economic principles and extend across all areas of its operations. Notable initiatives include:- BoxlessMove®, JK’s proprietary system that eliminates the need for cardboard boxes.
- Recycling paper, cardboard, and wood using compactors and augers.
- Use of recycled moving blankets, reused vehicle parts, and retreaded tires to maximize resource efficiency. Installation of motion-sensor lighting and use of reclaimed oil to heat its maintenance facility.
-
Energy Conservation
JK has implemented a range of energy-saving initiatives across all enterprise facilities, including:- Motion-sensitive lighting in warehouses
- Reused engine oil for facility heating
- Transition to compact fluorescent lighting (CFLs)
-
EPA SmartWay
As an EPA SmartWay Partner since 2008, JK is committed to reducing carbon emissions and improving freight efficiency through:- Advanced route optimization to reduce empty miles
- Replacement of older vehicles with low-emission models
- Ongoing driver training for fuel-efficient behavior
- Adding APU generator units on new tractor-trailers to reduce fuel used and increase engine life.
- Ordering Tesla Semi trucks which boast a 500-mile range and superior energy efficiency
-
ecolegIT Partnership
- To further enhance its carbon offset capabilities, CapRelo—part of the JK Moving family of companies--partners with ecolegIT, a pioneering platform focused on reducing the environmental footprint of the mobility industry. By embedding ecolegIT into operations, CapRelo calculates, audits, and offsets emissions linked to client relocations. All offsets fund sustainable forestry projects and are tracked in real-time. Clients receive carbon offset credits issued in their names, which provides transparency and assurance in their sustainability journey.
-
Conservation
- Sister firm JK Land Holdings (JKLH) invests strategically in land conservation, redirecting acquisition proceeds into permanent conservation easements, protecting critical landscapes, ecosystems, cultural sites, and biodiversity. For every acre of land developed commercially, JKLH sets aside approximately 44 acres for conservation.
- JK Moving donated conserved land to start the JK Community Farm, a nonprofit chemical free farm that donates 100% of its yield to alleviating hunger.
