Brithem LLP Welcomes Proven Impact Litigator Mike Materni as Partner

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Michele (“Mike”) Materni, a seasoned litigator known for his work on high-leverage financial litigations and investigations, has joined Brithem LLP as a partner. Mike is joining Brithem from Kaplan Martin LLP and previously spent eight years at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP.

Mike has extensive experience in matters arising from the most complex and seismic financial market events, including litigations and investigations relating to U.S. dollar LIBOR manipulation, the residential mortgage-backed securities-driven credit crisis, and the collapse of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange. His work often involves issues as novel in their substance as their scope. For JPMorgan, for instance, Mike helped achieve resolution with the Department of Justice and other agencies in a multi-year investigation into alleged “spoofing” by its traders in markets for precious metals and U.S. treasuries.

In addition to representing clients in domestic proceedings, Mike has extensive experience in cross-border investigations and legal matters. Among other past work, he represented Italian energy company ENI S.p.A. in multiple high-profile FCPA investigations related to its oil and gas businesses in Africa.

Before joining Brithem, Mike practiced at Kaplan Martin and Sullivan & Cromwell. He earned his J.D., cum laude, and his B.A. from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy. He received an S.J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he also completed the coursework for an LL.M.
