Protests: AHF Blasts Gilead Over Extortionate AIDS Drug Pricing

Daily April 14-17, Gilead HQ, 10:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m.

HIV drug maker’s pricing for its lifesaving HIV drugs puts nation’s HIV safety nets under tremendous strain; one Gilead’s HIV medication, Biktarvy, carried an annual sticker price of nearly $61,000 per patient in 2025

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Advocates and mobilizers affiliated with AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) will host a weeklong series of protests targeting HIV drug giant, Gilead Sciences, at its Foster City, CA, headquarters. The group is targeting the Bay Area drug company over its extortionate pricing for its lifesaving HIV medications.

Gilead’s steep HIV drug pricing was a contributing factor in Florida’s recent move to restrict access to its AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), which put Florida’s HIV safety net at risk. Nearly 20 other states have similarly scaled back their ADAPs.

Gilead’s pricing was a contributing factor in the State of Florida’s recent move to drastically restrict access to its AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), which put Florida’s HIV safety net under tremendous strain. This past weekend, AHF ran full page ads in five major Florida daily newspapers sharply criticizing Gilead over its drug pricing and policies. AHF’s “Greediad” ads were addressed to “Greedy Gilead.”

Florida is not alone dealing with high HIV drug prices. According to U.S. News and World Report, nearly 20 states have scaled back their HIV medication programs, and five more are considering similar restrictions. High drug prices, such as $61,000 annually per patient for Gilead’s HIV treatment, Biktarvy, are a significant factor. Other factors include the fact that “(ADAP) Enrollment increased by 30% from 2022 to 2024, in part because states began removing people from Medicaid after the pandemic. At the same time, federal funding has remained flat for more than a decade, even as drug prices and insurance premiums have increased.”

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the world’s largest HIV/AIDS healthcare organization, provides cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to more than 2.9 million individuals across 50 countries, including the U.S. and in Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, the Asia/Pacific Region, and Eastern Europe.
