Michael Hill Trial Law Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Laurels of Heath

Complaint is the latest of five actions alleging profit-driven understaffing across the Ciena Healthcare nursing home chain

CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Michael Hill Trial Law, a nationally recognized litigation firm specializing in nursing home abuse and neglect, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the estate of Raymond Erlenbach against The Laurels of Heath, a skilled nursing facility in Heath, Ohio. The complaint alleges that chronic understaffing and a failure to provide basic medical care allowed a known, treatable infection to escalate into fatal septic shock.

According to the filing, Mr. Erlenbach had a known history of UTIs requiring diligent monitoring. The lawsuit contends that despite his vulnerability, facility staff failed to recognize his declining condition. Even after Mr. Erlenbach was found unresponsive, the facility allegedly failed to call 911 immediately. By the time he was finally transported to the hospital, he was in septic shock. Mr. Erlenbach never recovered and passed away from complications including metabolic encephalopathy, pneumonia, and the underlying UTI.

"The most basic duty of any healthcare facility is recognizing when a resident is in crisis and calling for emergency help," said Michael Hill, founder of Michael Hill Trial Law. "Our complaint alleges that chronic understaffing at Laurels of Heath meant even that standard was not met, and the cases we have litigated against this chain suggest this is not an isolated failure."

The Laurels of Heath is part of the Laurels network, owned and operated by Michigan-based Ciena Healthcare, which manages 83 nursing homes across five states. Michael Hill has litigated against the chain across multiple cases:

  • Estate of Jack O. Huls v. Laurels of Mt. Vernon: Hill, then of Eadie Hill Trial Lawyers, secured a $5 million jury verdict in June 2022, reported to be the largest nursing home verdict in Knox County history, following allegations of systemic understaffing and neglect leading to death.

Three additional Michael Hill Trial Law actions against the chain are currently pending:

  • Estate of Jacqueline Elsharif v. Laurels of West Columbus: Alleges that a fall caused by insufficient staffing resulted in a hip fracture and the resident's death in December 2022. The case is scheduled for trial in October 2026.
  • Estate of Henrietta Veronica Wilson v. Laurels of Walden Park: Filed in November 2024, alleging systemic understaffing allowed untreated infections to progress to sepsis, organ failure, and death.
  • Estate of Lloyd Frazee v. Laurels of Mt. Vernon: Alleges inadequate fall prevention caused three falls, two hip fractures, and a resident's death in January 2023.

Federal data underscores the concerns alleged in the complaint. The Laurels of Heath holds a one-star "Much Below Average" overall rating and a one-star "Much Below Average" health inspection rating on Medicare's Care Compare tool, the lowest scores the federal government issues.

"When a corporation prioritizes profit margins over caregiver-to-patient ratios, the residents pay the price with their lives," Hill said. "We are filing this suit to hold Laurels of Heath accountable and to demand the transparency and care that Ohio seniors deserve."

The case is Estate of Raymond Erlenbach v. The Laurels of Heath, et al., Court of Common Pleas of Licking County, Ohio, Case No. 2026-CV-00587.
