Edison International Opens Applications for Lineworker Scholarship

Now in its sixth year, the program often leads to full-time, skilled trade positions at Southern California Edison

ROSEMEAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, Edison International announced the launch of the 2026 Lineworker Scholarship. Developed in partnership with IBEW Local 47, it offers a pathway to careers in skilled trades within the energy and utility industry.

The annual scholarship provides up to $25,000 each to as many as 12 recipients to enroll in Los Angeles Trade-Technical College’s Powerline Worker: Pole Climbing Certificate program and obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license. The scholarship covers tuition, tools and support services such as housing, transportation and childcare. Now in its sixth year, the program enables individuals from all backgrounds to receive the training necessary to contribute to the skilled trade workforce.

“Our industry is responsible for safely providing reliable electric service, and our lineworkers make that possible,” said Orville Cocking, SCE’s senior vice president of Transmission & Distribution. “The Lineworker Scholarship can help launch a rewarding career to dedicated individuals eager to make a difference in their community.”

Scholarship recipients are eligible for a full-time, entry-level position at SCE, after they complete the certificate program, obtain their Class A license and fulfill pre-employment requirements. All jobs are located within SCE’s 50,000-square-mile service area and may require relocation.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of electrical power line installers and repairers is projected to grow by 7% from 2024 to 2034, faster than the average for all occupations, which is largely due to increasing electrical grid needs.

“Lineworkers don’t just keep the lights on—they answer the call in the toughest conditions, around the clock, to keep our communities running,” said Colin Lavin, business manager of IBEW Local 47. “This partnership with Edison International is about investing in the future of our trade and making sure the next generation is ready to carry that responsibility.”

The Lineworker Scholarship is open to applicants who meet the following eligibility requirements, with preference given to California residents:

  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Enroll in the Powerline Worker: Pole Climbing (Powerline Mechanic) Certificate program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College for fall 2026
  • Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Are eligible to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Are eligible to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license
  • Are at least 18 years of age

The Lineworker Scholarship is funded by Edison International shareholders, not ratepayers, and IBEW Local 47. Since 2021, it has awarded 60 scholarships totaling $1.5 million.

The application deadline is Friday, May 8. For more information and to apply, please visit edison.com/lineworkerscholarship.
