Fuzzy Door Tech Powers Crushing Ceilings and Real-Time Visualization on Ted Season 2

ViewScreen delivers real-time control over digital elements, enabling confident creative decisions and a more efficient on-set workflow

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fuzzy Door Tech today detailed how ViewScreen, its suite of real-time production visualization (ProVis) tools, was used on Season 2 of the Ted TV series. Ted Season 1 marked the first television show to film an animated lead character, in real time, alongside other actors using ViewScreen. Season 2 expanded on this breakthrough by using ViewScreen to visualize and animate complex sequences combining live actors, digital environments, and comedic effects in real time in the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired episode.

A talking bear, crushing ceiling, expansive forest – see how FuzzyDoorTech's ViewScreen brought Season 2 of Ted to life.

“ViewScreen enables you to visualize anything digital in real-time while filming. For Season 2, we expanded how our technology was used on set,” said Faith Sedlin, president of Fuzzy Door Tech. “In pre-production, ViewScreen allowed the team to visualize the vast forest on an iPad, informing set layout and shot design. In production, ViewScreen let Seth MacFarlane and the rest of the crew see Ted in-camera and visualize sets and environments like the collapsing ceiling and expansive forest in Dungeons & Dealers, Episode 3.”

From Animating Ted to Visualizing Digital Worlds

Episode 3, titled “Dungeons & Dealers,” was one of the most ambitious episodes during Season 2. The episode required actors to perform inside a temple environment enhanced with a digital descending ceiling and spikes threatening to crush them. While portions of the temple set were physically built, the collapsing ceiling and spikes were digital effects.

ViewScreen allowed those elements to be visualized and animated live in camera. This let the entire crew view the digital ceiling and spikes integrated with the physical set in real time. This also gave MacFarlane, the camera operators, and actors the ability to evaluate blocking, camera movement, and comedic timing on set during filming rather than months later in post.

About ViewScreen

ViewScreen is an innovative suite of ProVis tools that allows filmmakers to simultaneously integrate and animate digital elements – including CGI characters and virtual set extensions with the real world – live during filming. From pre-production through post, ViewScreen accelerates workflows by delivering in-camera visualization, real-time VFX integration, and immediate creative feedback. The technology has been used on Season 1 and Season 2 of Ted as well as other major TV shows and feature films to visualize complex digital elements in real time.

About Ted Season 2

The hit comedic prequel series to the Ted films finds us in the '90s, and Ted the bear’s (Seth MacFarlane) moment of fame has passed. He’s now living back home in Framingham, Massachusetts with his best friend, 17-year-old John Bennett (Max Burkholder), along with John’s parents, Matty and Susan (Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach) and cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham). Ted may be a lousy influence on John, but at the end of the day, he’s a loyal pal who’s always willing to go out on a limb for friendship.
