More Than 40 Organizations Urge Congress to Eliminate Failed CMMI Program

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, 42 organizations sent a letter to lawmakers urging Congress to eliminate the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). The coalition highlighted that CMMI was created under the Affordable Care Act with a $10 billion budget every decade to test limited payment models that would reduce costs and improve care. Instead, the program lost $5.4 billion between 2011 and 2020 and is projected to lose an additional $1.3 billion by 2030.

Lawmakers should prioritize building on efforts to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse by eliminating CMMI and restoring accountability in federal healthcare policymaking.

“CMMI has a guaranteed source of funding that gives unelected bureaucrats broad authority to make healthcare policy decisions without any obligation to succeed,” the letter stated. “The lack of accountability and transparency and disregard for outcomes are costly for taxpayers and dangerous for patients.”

Lawmakers should prioritize building on efforts to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse by eliminating CMMI and restoring accountability in federal healthcare policymaking.
