Glen Cove Hospital Earns Presidential Quality Award

First New York hospital to receive Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for performance excellence in health care

GLEN COVE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Northwell’s Glen Cove Hospital has earned the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, which recognizes performance excellence by American businesses, education, health care and nonprofit organizations by the President of the United States. Glen Cove Hospital is one of only 33 hospitals to have ever received this recognition and the first in New York State.

The achievement places Glen Cove Hospital among an elite group of organizations nationwide that have been recognized for world-class leadership, innovation and measurable results. As New York’s largest not-for-profit health care provider and private employer, Northwell Health has built a national reputation for quality, innovation and patient-centered care.

With a comprehensive network of hospitals, outpatient facilities, research institutes and a medical school, the health system has consistently invested in leadership development, clinical excellence, digital transformation and workforce engagement. Glen Cove’s national recognition reflects not only the strength of its leadership and team, but also the broader culture of accountability, continuous improvement and strategic alignment that defines Northwell across its system.

“Glen Cove Hospital’s achievement reflects the very best of Northwell Health,” said John D’Angelo, MD, FACEP, Northwell’s president, CEO. “This recognition demonstrates how a relentless focus on quality, safety and innovation, combined with empowered teams and strong leadership, drives measurable results for the communities we serve. We are proud of the Glen Cove team for setting a national example of what health care excellence looks like.”

Award recipients will be honored and formally recognized at the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards Ceremony in Baltimore, MD, on March 29, where the awards will be presented by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.

“This award affirms what our multi-disciplinary team lives every day, an unwavering commitment to quality, compassion, and continuous improvement,” said Maria Torroella Carney, MD, president of Glen Cove Hospital. “Our staff, physicians and volunteers work together with a shared purpose, to deliver safe, reliable and exceptional care to every patient, every time. Being recognized at the national level is a testament to their dedication and to the culture of excellence we have built.”

Through its extensive Malcolm Baldrige application process, Glen Cove engaged in a rigorous, multi-year journey of organizational self-assessment, data validation and continuous improvement. The hospital systematically evaluated its leadership practices, strategic planning, workforce engagement, patient experience and measurable outcomes to meet the award’s exacting national standards.

“The Malcolm Baldrige Award recognizes organizations that achieve outstanding results while building sustainable systems for the future,” said Kerri Scanlon, RN, FAAN, executive vice president and president of Northwell’s Eastern Region Market. “This honor reflects the strength of our leadership, the engagement of our workforce and the power of aligning strategy with execution. We are proud to represent Northwell Health and New York State as a model of performance excellence.”

Established by Congress in 1987, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award promotes innovation, resilience and excellence across health care, education, manufacturing, nonprofit and other sectors. The award serves as the nation’s benchmark for organizational performance, recognizing excellence in leadership, strategy, customer focus, workforce engagement, measurement and results.

The hospital has achieved its highest national ranking to date for acute rehabilitation services, earning the No. 18 spot in the 2025 Best Hospitals rankings by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, the hospital has earned a 5-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the highest possible rating reflecting its outstanding performance in patient outcomes, patient safety, and overall quality of care. The combination of national recognition from U.S. News and the top CMS rating underscores Glen Cove Hospital’s steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to the local community and beyond.
