Enteligent Releases Technical White Paper Demonstrating 800VDC Power Architecture Significantly Cuts Data Center Cost and Energy Waste

As AI racks push significantly beyond 50 kW and move toward 100 kW and higher, legacy AC power architectures become increasingly difficult to scale.

Enteligent’s white paper quantifies why traditional AC power paths cannot scale economically or reliably to support modern GPU clusters, and why 800VDC — paired with 50VDC server architectures — represents the inevitable evolution of data center power.

AI data centers are quickly outgrowing traditional AC-based power architectures that are designed for a very different era of computing. Historically, legacy data center power systems were designed for rack power densities ranging from 3 to 12 kW. But today’s AI training clusters routinely exceed ten times that amount. High Voltage DC (HVDC) systems overcome the constraints of traditional AC systems, which are limited by thermal management, conductor sizing, and cumulative conversion losses, and often require multiple parallel runs, pushing up material costs and installation complexity. The copper and cabling implications of HVDC systems are also transformative, according to the research, with fewer conductors and up to 50-80% less copper required.

“As AI racks push significantly beyond 50 kW and move toward 100 kW and higher, legacy AC power architectures become increasingly difficult to scale,” said Mark Vena, CEO and Principal Analyst, SmartTech Research. “High-voltage DC distribution is gaining traction because it aligns power delivery with modern compute requirements while improving efficiency and reliability, providing long-term and cost-efficient infrastructure economics.”

As data centers expand, an 800VDC system eliminates or consolidates many of the components in complex upstream AC infrastructure. This can result in $4 million to $8 million CapEx savings per 10 MW build and roughly 8-12% reduction in annual energy-related OpEx improvements, according to the white paper, which explores these gains in detail.
