Graceland Celebrates Elvis’ Birthday with Five Days of Events This January

The schedule includes the Proclamation Ceremony, Elvis 1956 and Elvis: Made in Memphis concerts, plus two screenings of Baz Luhrmann’s EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert.

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Elvis Presley’s Graceland will celebrate the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s birthday this year with five days of events in Memphis, January 7-11. Born in 1935 in humble beginnings in Tupelo, Mississippi, Elvis Presley achieved legendary status, leaving a legacy that continues to resonate today.

Elvis’ Birthday Celebration kicks off on January 7 with a first look at new exhibit updates at Elvis: The Entertainer Career Museum. In honor of the 70th anniversary of 1956, fans can explore a new section dedicated to this landmark year in Elvis’ life and career. In addition, in anticipation of the upcoming release of Baz Luhrmann’s EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert, an updated section of Elvis: The Entertainer Career Museum will spotlight items from the Graceland Archives featured in the film. The evening concludes with a DJ Elvis Dance Party at the Graceland Soundstage.

On Elvis’ birthday, January 8, the day beings with the free annual Elvis Birthday Proclamation Ceremony on the front lawn of Graceland. Then, in the afternoon, Conversations on Elvis will be held at the Graceland Soundstage with a star-studded line-up of those who were close to or performed with Elvis, including Elvis’ friend Jerry Schilling, TCB Band bassist Jerry Scheff, Imperials Terry Blackwood and Jim Murray, former Stamps member Larry Strickland, and Tony Brown, keyboardist for Voice and member of the TCB Band in 1976-1977. Special guest Jonathan Redmond, editor for EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert, will join the event to share insights and build anticipation for the evening screenings of the film.

That evening, fans will gather in the new TCB Showroom at The Guest House at Graceland for the first advanced U.S. screenings of Baz Luhrmann’s EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert. Both Memphis screenings are sold out. For those missing the Memphis screening, EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert will open with a one-week exclusive IMAX engagement on February 20, followed by a theatrical release on February 27.

On Friday, January 9, Elvis fans can enjoy a special Elvis 101 presentation entitled Dear Elvis, kicking off a new project Graceland is launching for the year ahead. Later, the Graceland Soundstage will bring 1956 to life - the year Elvis became a superstar and the lightning rod for the controversy of early rock 'n' roll. Elvis 1956 will celebrate these pivotal moments through live music, on-screen Elvis performances, and conversations on the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s early days, featuring appearances by Elvis’ close friend Jerry Schilling, Billy Blackwood & The Blackwood Brothers Quartet, and Ultimate winner Emilio Santoro.

On January 10, a Memphis Bus Tour will take fans to visit Elvis sites around the city, including the Overton Park Shell and Memphian Theater (now Playhouse on the Square). That evening, the annual Elvis Birthday Pops Concert with Terry Mike Jeffrey and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra will present Elvis: Made in Memphis. From Sun Studio, to Stax and American Sound, and all the way down to the Jungle Room at Graceland, this fan favorite event will bring Elvis’ Memphis musical legacy to life with everything from heartfelt ballads to powerful concert anthems.

Other birthday events include The Jungle Room Sessions (1/9) honoring the 50th anniversary of Elvis’ famous Jungle Room session recordings in 1976; Elvis: Girls! Girls! Girls! (1/10), focusing on Elvis’ playful side - from flirtatious rockers to heartfelt ballads; and a Sunday Morning Gospel Sing (1/11) at The TCB Showroom with the Blackwood Brothers Quartet. Additional event guests and performers also include Ultimate ETA winner Patrick Dunn, hosts Tom Brown and Elvis Radio DJ Argo, singers Spencer Sutherland and Jillian Cardarelli, among others!

Ticket packages featuring “can’t-buy experiences” are still available, along with individual tickets to events. For a complete list of events plus tickets, visit Graceland.com/Birthday.

Fans who cannot make it to Memphis for the celebrations can watch the Elvis Birthday Proclamation Ceremony online for free via Graceland’s Vimeo page on January 8, at 8:30 am CST.
