Remembering Bob Foster: Former SCE President and Long Beach Mayor Who Shaped California’s Clean Energy Movement

ROSEMEAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The entire Edison International, Southern California Edison and Trio community is profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Foster, one of the most respected voices on energy policy and politics. Bob was known as an exceptional communicator and coalition builder, skills that proved invaluable as he helped California emerge from the energy crisis of the early 2000s.

“Bob was instrumental in guiding SCE through the California energy crisis and helping the company survive severe financial challenges,” said Pedro J. Pizarro, president and CEO of Edison International. “Under his leadership, SCE developed the largest portfolio of renewable energy programs in the United States. His impact on California’s clean energy future is still felt today.”

Bob began his SCE career in 1984 as head of the company’s Sacramento office, serving as principal liaison to the California Legislature and state agencies dealing with energy issues. He was elected vice president of public affairs in 1993, promoted to senior vice president in 1996 and assumed the position of senior vice president of external affairs for both SCE and Edison International in 2001. Bob became SCE president in 2002.

Bob served on numerous governing bodies for civic, cultural and governmental organizations and agencies, including the boards of directors of the California Foundation on the Environment and Economy and the Long Beach Aquarium. He was also a trustee of the California State University system and served on the CSU Foundation Board.

In September 2005, Bob retired as SCE president to pursue his long-held passion to run for elected office or pursue other public service opportunities. At that time, Bob said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my career at SCE and believe it is a company of outstanding character. I now want to serve the community and state in public service. I want to thank all of the SCE employees for the opportunity to work with them over the last 21 years. This has been a rich experience that has resulted in many wonderful friendships and accomplishments.”

Elected mayor of Long Beach in 2006, Bob served two terms through 2014. While mayor, he also served as chairman of the California Independent System Operator.

Our most heartfelt sympathy goes out to Bob's wife Nancy, his family, friends and loved ones. He will be deeply missed.
