With N-able, CRS Technology Consultants Saves CPA Firm From Business-Crippling Ransomware Attack in Under 24 Hours

Endpoint Management, Security Operations, and Data Protection power end-to-end defense that stopped ransomware in its tracks

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--N-able, Inc. (NYSE: NABL), a global software company delivering an end-to-end cyber resiliency platform, today unveiled how CRS Technology Consultants, a security-focused managed services provider, leveraged N-able to save a well-established regional CPA (Certified Public Accountant) firm from a business crippling ransomware attack in under 24 hours. With N-able, CRS demonstrated the power of business resilience that resulted in no ransom payout, no data loss, and no compromise of client trust.

Days before critical federal tax deadlines were due, the CPA firm faced a potentially devastating ransomware attack. The adversaries exploited a known SonicWall vulnerability to infiltrate the firm’s network; however, they were met with a fortified environment. With the rapid response of the CRS team and the N-able cyber resiliency platform, a potential extinction-level event for the firm was averted by containing, remediating, and fully resolving the incident in less than 24 hours by:

  • Alerting the CRS team in real time as servers began to fail, a critical capability of the N-able UEM solution N-central during cyberattacks. These alerts enabled immediate action to contain the threat and minimize downtime.
  • Triggering behavioural AI in the N-able Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solution upon detecting suspicious lateral movement, a distinctive trait of ransomware attacks, EDR swiftly isolated compromised endpoints and cut off the attackers mid-stride, preventing further spread.
  • Offering the ultimate safety net, the firm’s critical servers and cloud workloads had been backed up offsite by the Cove Data Protection solution from N-able. Even though local backups were destroyed, the cloud copies were untouched and fully intact ready to restore to ensure business continuity.

“Our client expected to be down for one to two weeks but instead, they were back to work by lunchtime and fully operational by the end of the day, ensuring they met every tax deadline thanks to the layered defense provided by N-able,” said John Joyce, CEO of CRS Technology Consultants. “We share these experiences openly because if our lessons can help prevent another organization from going through the same ordeal, that makes it worthwhile.”

The CRS team transformed a potentially devastating ransomware attack into a showcase of resilience. In the aftermath, CRS reinforced its defenses by making N-able's Adlumin MDR a standard, non-negotiable service for its clients, closing the loop on true end-to-end business resilience. This strategic move strengthens the CRS team's ability to reduce attack surfaces, minimize threat impact, and maintain seamless business continuity.

“This case is a powerful example of how true business resilience can save a business from losing customers or potential closure,” said Troels Rasmussen, General Manager of Security at N-able. “When every second counts, an integrated security stack isn’t just an advantage, it’s the difference between business chaos and business survival. CRS showed that with preparation and the right tools to minimize the attack surface, reduce the impact, and maintain business continuity, even ransomware can become a story of recovery and success.”
