Marshall B. Ketchum University Doctor of Medical Science Program Earns WSCUC Approval

Accreditation Reinforces MBKU’s Leadership in Post-Professional PA Education

FULLERTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program at Marshall B. Ketchum University (MBKU) has officially been approved by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) – a significant milestone underscoring the program’s quality and the university’s commitment to advancing physician associate (PA) education, with the first class set to begin November 2025

The DMSc program, which launched in spring of this year, was designed to close the gap between the more than 189,000 PAs currently practicing in the U.S. and the 2.7% who hold doctoral-level training. By offering a fully online, asynchronous format with multiple tracks, MBKU’s DMSc creates new opportunities for PAs to elevate their expertise, impact and earning potential.

Recent data show that 80% of DMSc graduates report higher salaries and better career advancement opportunities—outcomes that MBKU built its program to deliver. To support PAs at every stage, the university offers flexible pathways:

  • Recent PA Graduates: A six-month Advanced Professional Practice track to accelerate leadership skills early in a career.
  • Experienced PAs: A 12-month pathway with concentrations in PA Education or Healthcare Administration and Leadership, designed to prepare graduates for faculty roles or advanced administrative positions—critical areas currently experiencing national shortages.

“We are extremely proud to have received this accreditation as it underscores MBKU’s commitment to excellence in healthcare education,” Dr. Julie A. Schornack, president of MBKU. “This recognition positions MBKU as a leader in post-professional training and empowers PAs at every career level to enhance their expertise, strengthen their leadership and shape the future of healthcare. “

With its evidence-based curriculum, small cohorts and personalized mentorship, the DMSc program equips students to navigate healthcare systems, advance clinical education and influence health policy. WSCUC approval is a testament to MBKU’s national leadership—addressing faculty shortages while preparing the next generation of PA leaders.

“The DMSc is more than a degree. It’s a launchpad that equips PAs to lead with confidence and purpose,” added Robert E. McKenna, DMSc, MPH, PA-C, an expert in PA education, biopharmaceutical medical affairs and health policy, who is leading the program to help today’s PAs evolve with the profession.

Applications are now open for the Winter 2025-2026 quarter. To learn more about MBKU’s Doctor of Medical Science program or to apply, please visit https://ketchum.edu/.
