OpenTeams Partners with CultRepo to release Python: The Documentary

The film highlights the experts behind the world’s most influential programming language and showcases OpenTeams Founder and NumPy creator Travis Oliphant

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As part of its ongoing mission to support and strengthen the open source community, OpenTeams, the global leader in open source AI, was proud to sponsor the development of Python: The Documentary, a feature-length film exploring the origins of Python, through interviews with its foundational contributors, revealing how a side project in the 1990s became the foundation of AI and modern computing. The documentary was also sponsored by Anaconda, Dropbox, Meta and Quansight.

The documentary was produced by CultRepo, a fully independent production company committed to telling the human stories behind technology. The documentary features interviews with Python’s core contributors, including creator Guido van Rossum, longtime developer Raymond Hettinger, and Travis Oliphant, Chief AI Architect and Founder of OpenTeams and NumPy creator.

The full documentary is now available to watch for free on YouTube.

To showcase the film and bring together the open source community, OpenTeams hosted two invitation-only premiere screenings in Austin, TX, and London, UK. Each event brought together members of the open-source community, engineers, clients and partners. The screenings also included Q&As with Oliphant, offering a unique opportunity to hear firsthand reflections on the history and future of computing.

“Python was born from the open source technology community; software engineers who worked together, shared ideas and built upon each other’s success to create a new, easier way to code,” said Oliphant. “As AI development and adoption continue to accelerate, it is critical to remember the human stories that make it all possible. I am honored to be one piece of the open source legacy, and to continue to support the community's efforts through the work we are doing at OpenTeams.”

In addition to the 90-minute documentary, CultRepo featured Oliphant in a “mini-doc” on The early days of scientific Python. The supplemental video tells the story of Oliphant’s early career and his development of NumPy, an open-source library for numerical and scientific computing, which has enabled the widespread adoption of Python.
