Squamish municipal workers set to begin rotating job action

SQUAMISH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CUPE Local 2269 members have issued 72-hour strike notice and rotating job action will begin this coming Thursday, October 2, 2025.

“District workers provide the critical public services our community counts on,” says CUPE 2269 President Celeste Bickford. “But the cost of everyday basics has continued to rise, and workers need wages that keep pace with the real cost of everyday life.”

Bickford adds that another key issue is recruitment and retention, and notes that competitive pay is essential to ensuring residents, businesses, and visitors can rely on high-quality services.

“Our members have clearly rejected the District’s last offer and the strong strike mandate reflects workers’ concerns about the lack of progress at the bargaining table, and the District’s unwillingness to put forward a contract that meets their workers’ needs,” says Bickford.

A strike vote took place over two days in July 2025 after negotiations broke down. Members voted 100 per cent in favour of job action.

District workers will be in a legal strike position as of 10:30 a.m. on October 2, 2025. Specific details about which services and locations will be impacted will be announced the morning job action begins.

CUPE 2269 members represent approximately 250 workers who provide integral community services to residents, businesses, and visitors in Squamish including water and wastewater treatment, swimming lessons, children’s programs and camps, recreation services, facilities maintenance, parks and trails maintenance, bylaw and animal control, snow removal, emergency program administration, and administrative and operations support for the RCMP.

OTTAWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The residents of Villa Marconi are running out of clean laundry, and it is due to negligent policy making by management. In June, members of CUPE 4793 held an information picket outside the long-term care facility on Baseline Road to call out the callous layoffs in the laundry and environmental services department. Since then, management has cut hours for union workers and begun a campaign of retaliation and harassment against union members. Workers have been sent home...

The hospital is citing insufficient funding amidst rising costs of operations including drugs, salaries, and supplies. CUPE is joining forces with the Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) and OPSEU to hold a rally on August 19 to demand that the hospital reverse the cuts. They are also calli...

Ottawa’s Inaction Lets Smith Destroy Health Care

EDMONTON, AB--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CUPE Alberta President Raj Uppal is calling out the Liberal government in Ottawa for its inaction while the UCP dramatically expands private, patient paid health care in the province. “It’s been almost a year since the UCP passed Bill 11, allowing wealthy patients to buy their way to the front of the line for health care services,” said Uppal. “After all that time, Minister Michel this week sent a sternly worded note to the province asking them to change direction...
