Granite Announces Launch of Pajaro River Flood Risk Management Project – Reach 6

WATSONVILLE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Granite (NYSE:GVA) announced it has been awarded a contract valued at approximately $39 million by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for the construction of Reach 6 of the Pajaro River Flood Risk Management Project, a transformative initiative led and funded by USACE. The award will be reflected in Granite’s third quarter CAP.

Reach 6 is the first of five planned reaches and involves construction along Corralitos Creek, a tributary of the Pajaro River Levee System in the City of Watsonville, County of Santa Cruz. Designed to reduce flood risk for thousands of residents and businesses historically vulnerable to severe flood events, Reach 6 sets the tone for the broader effort, combining engineering excellence with local insight and community partnership.

“This initiative is particularly exciting for our team,” said Granite Vice President of Regional Operations, Brent Fogg. “It’s not only a vital investment in public safety and environmental stewardship, but also a meaningful opportunity to support the community where Granite was both founded and remains proudly headquartered.”

“This project reflects the strong collaboration between our Federal Division and Regional teams,” added Granite Vice President of Federal Operations, Curt Haldeman. “It creates opportunities for employees to deepen their experience with federal work and helps expand our federal market presence in California.”

The Project consists of 2.6 miles of flood risk management levees with approximately 111,600 compacted cubic yards (cy) of fill, and 1,500 ft of 6- to 9-foot-tall floodwalls. Granite’s Salinas Hot Plant will provide approximately 5,550 tons of hot mix asphalt (HMA), while its Handley Ranch facility will deliver 10,000 tons of baserock. The engineered levees have a crest elevation ranging from 2 to 8 feet, a minimum crest width of 20 feet, and 3H:1V side slopes. The access road, on top of the levee, will be surfaced with a minimum of 8 inches of CalTrans Class 2 Aggregate Base.

Granite looks forward to working closely with USACE, Pajaro Regional Flood Management Agency, and community stakeholders to deliver a resilient and sustainable flood protection system that benefits Pajaro, Watsonville and the surrounding areas for generations to come.

Construction is expected to begin in Fall 2025 and be completed in October 2027.
