OMAHA, Neb.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Union Pacific Railroad's iconic Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, will journey between Wyoming and Colorado later this month. The limited excursion will offer rail fans another opportunity to see the railroad’s rich history in action.

“The Big Boy not only represents Union Pacific Railroad’s rich history, it symbolizes who we are as a railroad – built on strength, innovation and grit,” said CEO Jim Vena. “It’s an important connector among our communities, customers and employees that serves as a rolling reminder of railroads’ historic role driving our nation’s growth.”

Mark your calendars:

  • Sept. 30
    • Cheyenne, Wyoming, departs 11 a.m. MDT
    • Greeley, Colorado, 12:45 p.m. - 1:15 p.m. MDT

After this trip, the legend lives on as Big Boy will gear up for a monumental journey in 2026 to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Stay tuned for details.

For more than 160 years, Union Pacific Railroad has been a driving force in shaping America’s economy and growth. That longstanding commitment to progress and service is reflected in Union Pacific’s legendary steam equipment. Twenty-five Big Boys were built during World War II, but only eight survived. No. 4014 is the only one of the eight still in operation and remains the world’s largest operating steam locomotive.

Union Pacific reminds all rail fans to keep safety top of mind and stay 25-feet back from the tracks when taking a picture or viewing the colossal locomotive. That means never take a picture or video standing on the track or the ballast and never climb on the locomotive or equipment.
