Baron & Budd Shareholder Scott Summy Receives Distinguished Alumni Honor from Tarleton State University

Summy was honored for his distinguished legal career, marked by decades of dedication to environmental protection and advocacy for clean water access across the nation.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Baron & Budd is pleased to announce that Scott Summy, shareholder and leader of the Environmental Litigation Group, was honored by his alma mater Tarleton State University with the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award. The award was presented on Saturday, March 29 at the university’s 2025 An Evening in Purple gala.

The Distinguished Alumni Award honors Tarleton graduates who bring distinction to the university through their career achievements, community service, and leadership. Honorees are nominated by their peers, friends, or family, with selections made by the Tarleton Alumni Association (TAA) Board of Directors. The Board’s final selections are then submitted Tarleton State University President Dr. James Hurley for final approval.

Known nationally as “The Water Lawyer,” Summy has dedicated his legal career to protecting public health and the environment. He is a trailblazer in environmental litigation, representing municipalities, water providers, and communities in landmark cases involving water contamination and corporate negligence.

Most recently, Summy was co-lead counsel in the record $12.5 billion nationwide class settlement with 3M for PFAS contamination. This has been recognized as the largest drinking water contamination settlement in U.S. history. He also negotiated settlements with DuPont, Tyco and BASF totaling over $2.251 billion for PFAS contamination in drinking water supplies. His leadership was also instrumental in managing the resolution of the $648 million nationwide PCB class settlement against Monsanto, the first case in U.S. history to hold a manufacturer liable for stormwater contamination.

“We are incredibly proud of Scott for receiving this prestigious honor,” said Russell Budd, President and Managing Shareholder of Baron & Budd. “His dedication to justice, his tireless efforts on behalf of communities, and his commitment to making a difference truly exemplify the values of excellence, integrity, and service.”

Summy remains steadfast in his commitment to protecting the environment, continuing to lead the charge in environmental litigation as the fight for clean water throughout the nation continues.
