Semtech Breakthrough Unlocks Mass Deployment of 50G Fiber Networks

Industry’s First ITU-Compliant Asymmetric 50G PON OLT Chipset Overcomes Power and Size Barriers for Next-Gen Fiber Networks

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq: SMTC), a high-performance semiconductor, Internet of Things (IoT) systems and cloud connectivity service provider, today announced the launch of the industry’s first International Telecommunication Union (ITU)-compliant asymmetric 50G PON OLT chipset. The new GN7161, GN7153BW and GN25L80B chipset enables the development of compact, power-efficient and fully standard-compliant SFP-DD triple-generation modules, accelerating the commercial deployment of 50G PON technology worldwide.

The global fiber broadband market faces a critical challenge: surging bandwidth demands from Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications, cloud gaming and remote work are pushing current networks to their limits. While 50G PON technology helps solve bandwidth and infrastructure challenges, early 50G triple-gen OLT prototypes have been power-hungry and non-compliant with standards.

Semtech’s new chipset uses advanced mixed signal equalization and high levels of integration to solve these challenges. Reduced power consumption and chip scale packaging enables a compact SFP-DD module form factor and helps the OLT system meet critical size, heat dissipation and port density requirements for scalable deployment. Full ITU compliance ensures seamless integration into carrier networks supporting GPON, XGSPON and HS-PON standards.
