Students Plan Walkout in Support of Striking Support Workers
CALGARY, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CUPE Local 40 has been informed that students at Lord Beaverbrook High School will be walking out of classes this afternoon in support of striking education support workers.
CUPE Local 40 represents about 800 custodial and maintenance staff at the Calgary Board of Education. They have been on strike since February 24th. Across Alberta, over 6,600 education support workers are on strike at nine school districts.
CUPE Local 40 President Clay Gordon welcomed the support, indicating that the strike is about classroom conditions that impact student learning.
“Students are being negatively affected by low wages, high turnover of staff, and vacancies in support positions. A good education requires well paid, satisfied support staff."
