eClinicalWorks Image AI Saves Time and Reduces Administrative Burden at Sugarloaf Medical by Routing Incoming Faxes

The innovative AI technology automates incoming faxes to appropriate patient records

WESTBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--eClinicalWorks®, the largest ambulatory cloud EHR, today announced that Sugarloaf Medical is successfully utilizing eClinicalWorks Image AI Assistant to streamline its fax inbox, saving staff’s time on each incoming fax. Image AI automates document recognition and assigns incoming faxes to accurate patient records, then the staff reviews and approves the match. By leveraging Image AI, the practice is achieving significant time savings each day, reducing administrative burden and risk of staff burnout.

“eClinicalWorks Image AI Assistant helps save time per fax,” said Kaley B, IT operations admin of Sugarloaf Medical. “We receive an average of 30 to 60 faxes each day, up to 300 each week. Previously, it would take a lot of time for a staff member to look at the document and determine which category or folder it falls into in the patient's chart. AI technology helps assign the incoming fax documents to the respective patient, allowing us to simply review and approve the match. This helps reduce administrative burden for our staff, streamline the workflow, and improve operational efficiency.”

Sugarloaf Medical offers internal medicine and primary care medical services to approximately 1,000 adult patients monthly. The practice receives 30-60 faxes daily, including discharge summaries, radiology reports, medical records requests, prescription requests, referral notes, surgical clearances and more. Before implementing Image AI, the staff had to manually open each document, review it, and attach it to the respective patient’s progress notes, which was incredibly time-consuming. Image AI helps detect document types and facilitates patient matching, streamlining the process and improving clinical efficiency.

"At eClinicalWorks, we’re democratizing AI in healthcare by introducing innovative solutions to reduce healthcare burden and improve patient care,” said Girish Navani, CEO and cofounder of eClinicalWorks. “By harnessing the power of AI in healthcare, for instance, with Image AI Assistant, we can save valuable time and resources and enhance clinical efficiencies across the nation.”

eClinicalWorks partnered with Microsoft to develop Image AI Assistant by utilizing Azure AI Services and Azure AI Document Intelligence. This AI technology helps to scan and sort through thousands of faxes, further analyzing and matching each fax to simplify the process for healthcare workers. A total of 427 practices have already implemented this solution and scanned nearly 2.2 million faxes, saving up to one minute per incoming fax.
