Edison International Provides Update on Southern California Wildfires and SCE Power Outages

ROSEMEAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Extreme winds and dangerous fires fueled by strong winds have created life-threatening conditions in parts of Southern California.

Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this significant event, and we offer our immense gratitude to the firefighters and other public safety officials.

Safety remains our number one priority for customers, employees and our communities.

The most notable current events are the Palisades, Eaton and Hurst fires. The Palisades Fire began Tuesday morning; the reported area of origin is not in Southern California Edison’s service area. The Eaton Fire began Tuesday afternoon in SCE’s service area. SCE has transmission facilities on the east side of Eaton Canyon. SCE’s distribution lines immediately to the west of Eaton Canyon were de-energized well before the reported start time of the fire, as part of SCE’s Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program. SCE is currently conducting a review of the event. The Hurst Fire began late Tuesday evening. While the reported ignition site is within the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s service area, SCE has transmission facilities near the reported ignition site, and the company is currently conducting a review of the event.

This extreme weather event is a rapidly evolving situation. While the most severe winds have started to abate, this weather is expected to continue through the early part of the weekend. Given the unsafe conditions for electric power restorations, customers may experience several days of outages. SCE will restore service as soon as it is safe to do so. The company will be supported by other utilities through our industry’s mutual assistance program, a hallmark of collaboration in the utility sector. As of 4 p.m. PST on January 8, 413,639 SCE customers are without power. Of those, 183,186 are from PSPS and 230,453 are related to the windstorm (non-PSPS); 453,872 are under a PSPS watch but still have power as of 4 p.m.
