Atlanta (ATL) to Orlando (MCO) is the #1 Busiest Route in the U.S., OAG Data Reveals

New York (JFK) to London Heathrow (LHR) Continues to Rank Among the World’s Top 10 Busiest Global International Routes

Key Findings:

  • Honolulu (HNL) to Kahului (OGG) ranks #2 among the busiest U.S. domestic routes, followed closely by Las Vegas (LAS) to Los Angeles (LAX) at #3.
  • Denver (DEN) to Phoenix (PHX) and Los Angeles (LAX) to San Francisco (SFO) round out the top 5, ranking #4 and #5 respectively among the top U.S. domestic routes.
  • New York La Guardia (LGA) to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) moved into the top 10 this year, ranking #7 among U.S. domestic routes.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OAG, the leading data platform for the global travel industry, today revealed its 2024 Busiest Routes in the world. The analysis is powered by OAG's Global Airline Schedules Data and provides an overview of route performance and trends, both internationally and domestically.

Atlanta (ATL) to Orlando (MCO) takes over the #1 spot in the Top 10 Busiest Domestic Airline Routes list, with 3.5 million seats, a similar capacity to last year and in 2019. Honolulu (HNL) to Kahului (OGG), the busiest domestic route in the U.S. in 2023, ranks #2 this year with 3.4 million seats, 17% higher capacity than in 2019. With just 14,941 (0.4%) seats difference, Las Vegas (LAS) to Los Angeles (LAX) follows closely behind to rank #3.

Rounding out the top 5 busiest U.S. domestic routes are Denver (DEN) to Phoenix (PHX) at #4 and Los Angeles (LAX) to San Francisco (SFO) at #5. New York La Guardia (LGA) to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) moves into the top 10 this year at #7. LGA-ORD had the highest increase in capacity year on year, growing by 17% in 2024 compared to 2023.

New York (JFK) to London Heathrow (LHR) is the only international route originating in the U.S. to be featured in the Top 10 Busiest Global International Airline Routes list, ranking #10. JFK-LHR international route capacity increased 3% over last year, with 4 million seats in 2024.

“Although American Airlines and United maintained similar route capacity from New York La Guardia to Chicago, the addition of 700 flights from Spirit Airlines helped position it as one of the busiest U.S. routes this year, pointing to an evolving competitive landscape,” said John Grant, chief analyst at OAG. “Additionally, travelers are flying more with TSA recording its busiest travel day in history over the Thanksgiving holiday. Airlines in the U.S. who strategically use real-time aviation insights will best adapt to these market changes and win over traveler expectations.”

Outside of the U.S., Hong Kong (HKG) to Taipei (TPE) reclaimed its #1 spot as the Busiest Global International Airline Route in the world, after ranking #3 in 2023. Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Singapore Changi (SIN) ranks #4, dropping from #1 last year.

The busiest air routes are defined as those with the largest volume of scheduled airline seats in 2024. Data is for flights in both directions on each route and is sourced from OAG Schedules Analyser in the first week of each month. The data reflects the most recent year for the busiest scheduled domestic and international aviation routes in each category. Historical data for 2019 and 2023 have been used for analysis.
