“We Are Fighting for Respect and Fairness:” Clerical Staff at Mount Sinai to Rally on Tuesday Morning

Staff are demanding the hospital negotiate a contract that offers fair wages and better working conditions

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The frustration among clerical workers at Mount Sinai hospital is palpable. They are paid lower wages compared to other hospital workers in the GTA, endure highly stressful working conditions, and are deeply unsatisfied about the way they are treated by their employer.

On Tuesday morning, led by Fadumo Mohamed, the CUPE 5492 president, the workers intend to send a strong message to the hospital: management needs to address their concerns. For a start, they want the hospital to negotiate a new contract (the old one expired in February 2023) that helps them achieve parity with other hospital workers in the region, and addresses workload issues.

Strike action is always a last resort, and our goal remains r...

“Shocking and unacceptable” – Union directs anger at provincial government, says patients and staff will pay price of 55 layoffs at Bruyere Health

OTTAWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In his 30-year career as a nurse at Bruyere Health, Douglas Currier has never seen staff so thoroughly demoralized. Chronic understaffing and perpetual overwork have left workers burnt out. But instead of getting a reprieve in the form of additional staffing, provincial funding cuts have prompted the hospital to announce 55 layoffs: 46 personal care aides and 9 nurses. Currier, the president of CUPE 4540, which represents about 850 staff at Bruyere, said he was shocked...
