altafiber Announces LEED Silver Certification of Atrium Two Headquarters Office in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--altafiber is pleased to announce LEED Silver certification of its Cincinnati, Ohio headquarters office located in the Atrium Two building at 221 E. 4th Street. This project also fulfills environmental and wellness commitments altafiber made as a member of the Cincinnati 2030 District in 2018 to dramatically reduce its energy and water use, reduce commuting emissions and address wellness in the workplace by 2030.

The LEED Silver certification aligns with altafiber’s climate action plan, which targets a 40% greenhouse gas emissions reduction by 2030. The company’s ultimate goal is to reduce GHG emissions intensity to net-zero by 2040.

“Our workplaces have a significant impact on our health, productivity and well-being. Buildings are also responsible for an enormous amount of global energy use and resource consumption. Tracking and achieving LEED certification provided us a measuring stick and accountability for both our cultural and environmental goals,” said Patrick McDonough, Vice President for Business Operations at altafiber.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, certification ensures electricity cost savings, lower carbon emissions and healthier indoor environments. altafiber partnered with architect and engineering firm Elevar, general contractor HBC Facility Management and ZH Commissioning to design and construct the space to LEED Silver standards.

The project achieved LEED status based on categories that address carbon, energy, water, waste, transportation, materials, and indoor air quality. A few project highlights are:

  • Reducing lighting power use 40%, with LED lights & sensor controls; using 89% ENERGY STAR appliances & equipment.
  • Reducing indoor water use 30% by using low-flow and WaterSense fixtures.
  • Reusing 35% of furniture; diverting 81% of demolition and renovation wastes from the landfill.
  • Exemplary sourcing of “green” materials and no- or low-emitting materials (e.g., low-VOC paints and furniture) for healthier indoor air.
  • Increasing air filtration, adding live plants, workstations with views to the out-of-doors and other indoor quality measures.

“Our headquarters office is now the flagship for our workplace culture of collaboration, transparency, and stewardship,” said Christi Cornette, Chief Administrative Officer for altafiber. “From ergonomics and safety, to flexibility of work environment, to daylight and clean indoor air, to modern tech, to HVAC and water efficiency, this integrative project sets a standard for altafiber going forward.”
