Health Care Workers to Rally for a Decent Pension Plan at SickKids Hospital on Monday

Nurses, patient service aides, clerical staff, lab technicians and others want same pension plan as other hospital workers in Ontario

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Health care staff at SickKids Hospital will be holding a big demonstration on Monday morning, calling on their employer to commit to a decent pension. This is the third rally they have organized this year, with growing participation each time.

The workers organizing the rally include nurses, patient service aides, housekeepers, lab technicians, and clerical staff, who are frustrated at the hospital’s indifference after having “dedicated” their lives to supporting the most vulnerable children.”

Instead of their current poverty-inducing retirement pay, the staff want the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP) – which is standard in the hospital sector. SickKids is soon set to become the only hospital in Ontario that is not part of HOOPP.

Ford Government passing the buck on university funding – students, workers and economy will pay the price

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Ontario government made a funding announcement today that will continue deep staff cuts, rising tuition fees and increased student debt. “The minister was long on scapegoating, but short on funding. Ontario has the worst university funding in Canada, and he’s passing the blame for his own cuts to other levels of government, and passing more and more of the costs onto the students, who are already graduating with record debt loads,” said Fred Hahn, president of CUPE...
