Federal Circuit Affirms Invalidation of Miller Mendel Patent Claims

STOCKTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In a significant legal decision, the Federal Circuit has confirmed a lower court's ruling that invalidates several claims of a patent held by Miller Mendel, Inc., deeming them ineligible for patent protection.

On July 18, 2024, the Federal Circuit upheld the decision of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, which found that three claims in Miller Mendel's U.S. Patent No. 10,043,188 did not meet the eligibility criteria under 35 U.S.C. § 101. The court determined that these claims were directed towards an abstract idea and lacked any inventive concept.

Case Background

Miller Mendel initiated a lawsuit against the City of Anna, Texas, in December 2021, alleging that the city's use of Guardian Alliance Technologies' pre-employment background investigation management software infringed on its patent. In April 2022, the district court ruled in favor of the City of Anna, granting their motion for judgment on the pleadings, thereby invalidating the claims and dismissing the case with prejudice. Miller Mendel subsequently appealed the decision.

In their appeal, Miller Mendel contended that the district court had misapplied the law and erroneously concluded that the patent claims were abstract. However, the Federal Circuit's detailed opinion supported the lower court's ruling, emphasizing that the claims only described routine and conventional steps performed by generic computer components.
