UGA Law School Dean, Peter “Bo” Rutledge, Joins Morris, Manning & Martin

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Morris, Manning & Martin today announced that Peter “Bo” Rutledge has joined the firm as senior counsel in the firm’s litigation practice in Atlanta. Currently the dean of the University of Georgia School of Law, Rutledge will join the firm on a part-time basis before transitioning from his law school post to Morris Manning full time in the summer of 2025.

At Morris Manning, Rutledge will be focused on building out an appellate practice and rounding out the firm’s ADR practice with his significant international dispute resolution experience.

“Given his vast legal knowledge and experience, Bo could have joined any firm in Atlanta, and we are thrilled he chose MMM,” said the firm’s managing partner, Simon Malko. “His leadership at the UGA law school has been truly transformative, as has his commitment to recruiting from a rich and diverse talent pool, including ex-military and first-generation college students. Bo is the perfect fit to take the firm’s litigation practice to the next level.”

Additionally, Rutledge’s extensive connections in the legal industry will help support the firm’s efforts to grow and strengthen its relationships within the new Georgia economy.

“Bo’s briefs on behalf of the business community have always been outstanding, reflecting his deep expertise with complex international business disputes and especially arbitration. He has a remarkable ability to persuade by making even the most complex issues accessible to courts,” said Jonathan Urick, the Associate Chief Counsel at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, about Rutledge’s work.

While serving as dean of the law school and throughout his career in higher education, Rutledge has continued to keep a hand in legal practice and serves as an arbitrator with several international organizations. His appellate experience includes drafting more than 50 briefs in the Supreme Court of the United States and the lower federal/state courts. He has appeared as an expert in international litigations and arbitrations and testified in Congress on several occasions on arbitration. He has also authored two books: Arbitration and the Constitution and several editions of International Civil Litigation in United States Courts, the leading treatise in the field.

“Over the last 10 years as dean, I’ve had the unique opportunity to work with many great law firms and lawyers, but what drew me to MMM was the firm’s collaborative culture and a strong fit between the litigation practice and the skills I bring to the table,” said Rutledge. “Plus, I am beyond excited to work alongside a wonderful group of attorneys, some of whom were my former students.”

“Bo has been an esteemed mentor of mine for years, and I am honored to now have the opportunity to work alongside him,” said Hillary Lukacs, MMM associate and Rutledge’s former student, research assistant, and mentee. “He has always made time for his students, worked tirelessly to champion their careers, and celebrated their successes – both personally and professionally – as if they were his own. He will be a valuable asset to MMM, not just for his exceptional legal acumen and professional reputation, but for the role he will undoubtedly play in shaping the next generation of lawyers at the firm.”

Rutledge is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Law Institute, and the Society for the Rule of Law. He is also a board member of Extra Special People, a non-profit organization created to provide opportunities and experiences for people with disabilities and their families. Rutledge received his J.D. from the University of Chicago, a Master of Letters in applied ethics from the

University of Aberdeen in Scotland, and a bachelor’s degree in government from Harvard University.
