Cofertility’s "State of Egg Freezing 2024" Report Reveals 30% Increase in Egg Freezing Cycles Year-Over-Year

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cofertility, the human-centered fertility ecosystem offering a scalable approach to egg freezing and third-party reproduction, this week announced the release of its comprehensive report, "State of Egg Freezing 2024." This report provides an in-depth analysis of the latest trends, motivations, and advancements in the field of egg freezing, highlighting a significant 30% year-over-year increase in egg freezing cycles.

The report explores the shifting motivations driving this increase, emphasizing the changing societal norms and greater acceptance of egg freezing as a viable option for women who wish to delay childbirth. Key factors contributing to this trend include career aspirations, educational goals, and the desire for later-life family planning. Additionally, the report details how technological advancements have played a crucial role in enhancing the success rates of egg freezing procedures, making them more accessible and reliable than ever before.

Key Findings of the Report:

  • Significant Growth in Demand: Demand for egg freezing is soaring, with a 30% year-over-year increase in cycles. This reflects changing priorities and greater acceptance of the procedure, but there’s still substantial room for growth as financial barriers are addressed, medical technology advances and societal acceptance further solidifies egg freezing as a mainstream fertility preservation option.
  • Evolving Priorities: Motivations for egg freezing evolve with age. Initially, the focus is on career and education. Later, finding a partner becomes more important. While priorities remained broadly consistent across geographies, subtle variations emerged based on where women lived. In larger cities, there is more of an emphasis on prioritizing career advancement and education and greater uncertainty about wanting kids altogether.
  • A Broader Trend of “Later” Parenthood: While innovations in egg freezing technology, greater visibility through media coverage and changing social climates may have played a significant role in driving the increase in egg freezing demand, there has also been a universal increase in the relevance of egg freezing for those desiring the option for biological children “later” in life. This trend reflects a broader societal shift towards later marriage and parenthood.

The "State of Egg Freezing 2024" report was developed in response to the recently released 2022 assisted reproductive technology (ART) data from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), which was published in April 2024. The SART data highlighted trends in ART procedures, prompting Cofertility to survey 75,000+ respondents ages 20-45 from August 2022 to April 2024 to further examine the societal implications and motivations driving demand.

The report was authored by Cofertility Co-Founder Halle Tecco, MPH, MBA, alongside medical advisors Dr. Meera Shah, MD, FACOG, a double board-certified OBGYN and reproductive endocrinology and fertility specialist at NOVA IVF in Mountain View, California, and Dr. Mare Mbaye, MD, a board-certified OBGYN based in New York City.
