Mark Farrah Assessed Year-End Health Insurance Segment Membership Trends

MCMURRAY, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mark Farrah Associates (MFA), www.markfarrah.com, released a year-end 2023 health insurance segment enrollment update. MFA compared membership between 4th quarter 2023 and 4th quarter 2022 to provide greater insight into enrollment trends for the Individual, Group, ASO, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid insurance segments. As of December 31, 2023, approximately 318 million people received medical coverage from U.S. health insurers. This number is down 2.1 million members from a year ago.

  • Between 4Q22 and 4Q23, membership for the Individual market gained approximately 3.5 million more members.
  • The Medicare Advantage market also experienced a membership increase with 1.8 million new members, representing a 6.3% growth, from 4Q22.
  • The Employer-group risk and Employer-group ASO (administrative services only for self-funded plans) segments provide the largest sources of coverage in the industry, however, while Employer-group ASO saw a 1.6 million increase of enrollees, the Employer-group risk market experienced year-over-year membership declines.
