Mercury Is Building a Learning and Entrepreneurial Culture – Lessons from Hap Klopp, Founder of The North Face

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mercury’s values of Client Obsession, Relentless Improvement, and World-Class Teamwork call for having a culture of learning and entrepreneurship where people have a strong sense of ownership and responsibility for their work and business outcomes. We look for inspiration all around us, and who could be a better source of inspiration than a man who has built one of the most recognizable global brands, Hap Klopp, the Founder of The North Face.

Hap Klopp was the keynote speaker at our January quarterly meeting in Istanbul, Turkey. He delivered a keynote address chock full of lessons on how people and organizations must act in this era full of disruptions. Ultimately, every person on a team must act as an entrepreneur. According to Hap Klopp, among other things, entrepreneurs must use the scientific method to test and experiment to find what works. Acting quickly is key. He extolled the Silicon Valley culture where failing fast and failing forward are widely practiced approaches, propelling people and organizations forward.

Hap Klopp also spoke of the power of intuition, which actually draws heavily on experience. He shared examples of brave acts where intuition had served entrepreneurs right. Ultimately, it’s about having a sense of ownership and being motivated. And motivation comes from within a person. In closing, Hap Klopp quoted Charles Darwin on adaptability to change being key. Darwin said, “It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.”

Following the keynote address, Hap Klopp conducted a team-building exercise on communication. One of the key lessons from the exercise was to break certain established expectations that can be constraining.
