National Eating Disorders Awareness Week: Alsana Experts See Eating Disorders on the Rise

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Experts from Alsana, an eating disorder treatment provider and recovery community, are educating individuals and families ahead of Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAW) that eating disorders are a mental health condition that can affect people of all genders and sexual orientations, at any age and income level. It’s important that people recognize that virtual treatment can help – about 3% more virtual patients experience a reduction in eating disorder symptoms compared to those in in-person treatment.

“The number of people with eating disorders continues to increase as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic – we’re seeing people who are even more unwell, compared to the last several years,” said Angela Dainas, LMFT, CEDS. “It’s important that families and other loved ones know the signs of an eating disorder and understand that virtual treatment, which can be accessed anywhere in the nation, can help.”

NEDAW, which is February 26 – March 1, 2024, focuses on the importance of early diagnosis and promotes treatment and accessibility within a supportive community.

Eating disorders are extremely dangerous and have a high mortality rate. Studies show that one person dies of complications from an eating disorder every 52 minutes. Getting treatment early through a virtual program can lead to long-lasting recovery.

Recovery from an eating disorder is possible, even after a relapse. Alsana’s personalized treatment programs focus on total health, wellbeing, and meeting people where they are in their recovery journey.
