Battelle Ranked Fifth on Fortune’s 2023 Change the World List for Its PFAS Annihilator® Technology

First commercially deployed technology proven to safely destroy ‘forever chemicals’ recognized in the ninth annual list of companies addressing the world’s greatest challenges.

COLUMBUS, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--This morning Fortune announced its 2023 Change the World List, recognizing Battelle for the company’s development of the PFAS Annihilator®, the first-to-market technology that safely destroys per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or “forever chemicals,” without any harmful byproducts. The Change the World List features innovative companies that are making a significant impact on the world’s leading societal and environmental issues. Battelle ranked fifth on the list of more than 50 companies.

With the PFAS Annihilator, now a commercially deployed solution offered by Battelle startup Revive Environmental, Battelle is not only the first to successfully tackle the safe destruction of PFAS, but is now scaling and diversifying its efforts in the space to enable large-scale destruction of PFAS in various forms.

“The PFAS Annihilator marks an unprecedented resolution for the previously unsolvable problem of PFAS chemicals, which have been contaminating the water, soil and food of more than 200 million Americans,” said Battelle CEO Lou Von Thaer. “This technology truly has the power to change the world as we continue to scale its commercial deployment and application, and is the latest innovation in Battelle’s more than 100-year journey toward addressing the world’s greatest challenges through science and technology for a safer, healthier and more secure world.”

Battelle has a long history of solving and supporting some of humanity’s most significant scientific and technological advancements, including the barcode, aluminum foil, the copy machine and the launch of Apollo 11.

In April 2023, the PFAS Annihilator reached a new milestone with its full-scale, commercial deployment in Wyoming, Michigan, where the technology has processed more than 100,000 gallons of concentrated waste per day. More recently, in July 2023, the State of New Hampshire contracted Revive Environmental to deploy the PFAS Annihilator to permanently destroy more than 10,000 gallons of firefighting foams, specifically aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs), accumulated through the state’s AFFF Take Back Program.

The 2023 Fortune Change the World list features 59 companies, including some of the most recognized and impactful names in corporate innovation.
