Modern Health Expands Substance Use Care Offering To Address Ongoing Substance Use Crisis

Modern Health Empowers Employers To Offer Proactive Preventative Care And Specialized Substance Use Treatment

SAN FRANCISCO--()--Modern Health, a leading global workplace mental health platform, today during National Recovery Month, announces the expansion of its substance use care offering, providing robust and comprehensive support for employers and their employees with substance use concerns. Modern Health’s clinically designed support addresses the entire spectrum of substance use needs, providing proactive detection and outreach, comprehensive clinical treatment, specialized care coordination for members with high-acuity needs, as well as evidence-based preventative care and education. Modern Health is empowering employers to support their entire workforce with clinically robust and personalized care no matter where they are in their journey.

This launch comes at a time when mental health needs are rising, and substance use disorder affects a large proportion of the country: most adults in the U.S. report being affected by the substance use crisis, with two-thirds of adults having either personally experienced a substance use problem or had a family member who experienced an alcohol or drug use concern. Despite these alarming numbers, the vast majority—more than four out of five Americans who need treatment for substance use—do not receive it.

“We are facing an ongoing substance use crisis in this country, which is placing an even greater burden on our healthcare system and our workplaces,” comments Dr. Jessica Watrous, licensed psychologist, expert in substance use research and treatment, and Director of Clinical & Scientific Affairs at Modern Health. “We need to provide more access to robust clinical care and coordination in a way that feels approachable and less stigmatizing to those experiencing substance use concerns. We also know that the effective integration of patient-centered prevention, treatment, and recovery care is key to addressing substance misuse and will better serve individuals and reduce costs to society and workplaces. Modern Health’s care is centered on providing the best clinical support for those three pillars - treatment, recovery, and prevention. “

As many as 162 million Americans report using substances in the past month, and between 16-25% of adults have experienced a substance use disorder in the past year. According to the CDC, 70% of all adults with an alcohol or illicit drug use disorder are employed (nearly 9% of all employed adults, around 13.6 million workers), making the workplace an important setting to address substance use concerns. Substance use disorder treatment is heavily impacting businesses, costing workplaces an annual average of $15,640 per affected employee enrolled in employer-sponsored insurance, totaling $35 billion. Studies show that substance use results in 500 million lost workdays and national costs exceeding $400 billion each year.

In addition to providing potentially life-saving care, research shows that, on average, treatment can save companies $3,200 to $8,400 for each employee who recovers. These figures are prompting employers to not only consider how to best support high-acuity employees but also provide clinically robust preventative support.

Modern Health’s Substance Use Care integrates multiple care offerings, including therapy, psychiatry, and medication management, as well as Care Connect, the industry’s most complete services suite for guiding members to care, with a focus on members with highly acute or otherwise complex mental health needs. Modern Health’s Substance Use Care has been designed and developed by Modern Health’s industry-leading team of clinicians and research scientists for full-spectrum support and includes:

  • Proactive Detection & Outreach: Members with high-acuity and complex needs are proactively identified and will be contacted by licensed Care Coordinators to engage on a 1:1 basis and provide care coordination support.
  • Clinical Substance Use Treatment: Members with substance use concerns will be connected to the right level of care for their needs, including access to clinical therapy with highly-trained clinicians with expertise in substance use disorders, psychiatry & medication management support where appropriate, details on local services or support groups, and insurance navigation support.
  • Specialized Care Coordination: For members in the U.S. who require higher levels of care, we provide high-touch services and specialized care coordination to support placement in inpatient and intensive outpatient programs.
  • Preventive Care & Education: Members are supported with habit-building coaching with certified professionals, self-guided exercises on coping skills and lifestyle changes, and topic-specific group support through our award-nominated Circles led by Modern Health providers on subjects including Sober Curious.

“We know that people with substance use concerns don’t leave those problems at home when they show up for work. There are millions of workers right now experiencing substance use problems and struggling to find substance use care that meets their needs, and employers can play a critical role in providing the right support that can change their lives,” adds Dr. Jessica Jackson, licensed psychologist, substance use specialist, and Clinical Strategy Manager at Modern Health. “Drug and alcohol misuse frequently co-occur with mental health concerns, so comprehensive healthcare has to include whole-person care that addresses employees’ mental and behavioral health, not just their physical health needs. ”

The expansion of our Substance Use care comes on the heels of continued clinical innovation, including the recent launch of Pathways, the first of its kind in the digital mental health industry and the only modality of care that guides both managers and employees through specialized topics with an evidence-based structure, ongoing 1:1 support from a dedicated Pathway Specialist, self-guided experiences, and topic-specific assessments to measure impact.
