Stevens Institute of Technology Sued for Race Discrimination and Retaliation

Rogers & Jung Labor and Employment Attorneys File Lawsuit Charging that an Asian Employee was Targeted for Discipline Because of Her Race, and Then Fired for Complaining About Discrimination

HOBOKEN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Stevens Institute of Technology, one of the oldest technological universities in the United States, located in Hoboken, New Jersey, violated the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination when it treated an Asian employee differently because of her race and then fired her for reporting the discrimination, as detailed by a lawsuit filed by Beth Rogers of Rogers & Jung.

According to the complaint, former Stevens’ Vice-President Edward Stukane and Assistant Vice-President Anastasia (“Stacey”) Greene violated the law by subjecting Young Soo Yang, the senior manager of digital content of the university from 2014 to 2020, to harsher discipline because of her Asian race. The same individuals failed to discipline Caucasian employees for committing the same or similar alleged offenses, the complaint declares.

After a university-wide conference “Standing Against Racism,” Yang reported her experiences and objections to the racial discrimination she experienced at Stevens to Stevens’ human resources department and members of the President’s cabinet. Shortly thereafter, as alleged in the lawsuit, Yang was wrongfully terminated in retaliation for her complaints.

Yang filed suit (Yang v. Stevens Institute of Technology, et al. Civil Action No. MER-L-668-21) in the New Jersey Superior Court, Middlesex County, seeking back pay, compensatory and punitive damages.

Yang states that “An employer should not treat any employee differently simply because of their race” and that she hopes that her lawsuit will “prevent such discrimination in the future.”
