Patented Encapsulated Metalized Film Protects Against Corrosion and Ensures 100x More Chemical Resistance Than HDPE

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif.--()--Land Science®, a division of REGENESIS® and the recognized leader in contaminant vapor intrusion mitigation technologies, has developed a unique contaminant vapor barrier solution that leverages the beneficial properties of metalized film to diffuse contaminant gases. The newly patented design encapsulates the metalized film in an advanced composite membrane that protects it against corrosion.

This innovative reinforced geomembrane system, which is installed with Nitra-Core™, a nitrile-modified asphalt spray coating, provides 100 times more chemical resistance than other solutions and is integral to the enhanced protection built into Land Science’s popular MonoShield® and TerraShield® contaminant vapor barrier systems.

The one-of-a-kind design offers superior protection compared to commonly used high-density polyethylene (HDPE) systems because of the multiple layers of protection in the advanced composite membrane. In addition to the encapsulated metalized film, the reinforced grid geomembrane and geotextile ensure greater tensile strength, enhance durability and minimize the potential for punctures during installation that can occur in demanding construction environments.

In comparative lab tests, this inventive material design has proven to significantly improve chemical resistance, constructability and durability compared to asphalt latex membranes (ALMs) adapted from the waterproofing industry. That superior performance separates Land Science’s contaminant vapor intrusion (VI) systems from other contaminant VI barriers on the market, especially those using heat welded or taped seams. Those weak points in other systems can be compromised in an active construction environment.

“This design advancement is a significant milestone for our team and recognizes our efforts to improve and advance the effective use of materials like metalized films to provide a safer, more protective solution to the industry,” says REGENESIS President and CEO Scott Wilson. “Our team of scientists is focused on innovation and while the use of metalized film has been around for decades, the added features incorporated into our proprietary system warrant the patent and ensure a more robust and trusted solution for the industry.”

The encapsulated metal film, commercially known as TerraBase+™, is marketed through the Land Science team of technical sales representatives based throughout North America.
