Morris Martin Moore Announce Settlement Approved in Girls’ and Boys Homes Class Action in NL

MOUNT PEARL, Newfoundland and Labrador--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador has approved a settlement between the Representative Plaintiffs and the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial Government. The Settlement Agreement includes a fund of $12,500,000.00 for children and youth who were sexually abused in residential institutions. The Institutions went by a variety of names including: Training Schools, Boys’ Home, Girls Home, and Youth Centre. People who were subject to sexual misconduct during the Class Period (May 1, 1973 – June 30, 1989) are entitled to compensation.

Sexual misconduct includes sexual assault, beatings while naked, and sexually derogatory language. The abusers were staff at the Institutions, volunteers at the Institutions (including clergy), and older youths also resident at the Institutions.
